Behind, the trees of the Adirondack forest blaze red and gold.","A young man with a peachy, ruddy complexion lies on his stomach in a wooden rowboat on a river, reaching forward to grasp the horn of a stag almost completely submerged in the rippling water with one hand. On the opposite riverbank, gold, rust, and scarlet-red trees span the width of this horizontal painting. The boy’s arms straddle the stern of the boat so one holds the antler with his right hand, closer to us, while the other clutches a rope with a loop at the end. He turns his face, mouth agape and cheeks flushed, over his right shoulder to look to our left, at a dog swimming toward the boat. The dog has white and caramel-brown markings, with dark brown ears. The boy wears earth-brown clothing and the front of his wide-brimmed hat is pushed up to reveal dark eyes and sable-brown bangs and brows. The stag and dog are between us and the boat, and are surrounded by thick brushstrokes of parchment white to create ripples in the forest-green water. Only the open muzzle, part of the eye, and the tips of the stag’s antlers are above the water’s surface. To our right, a bare, fallen tree lies along the far riverbank parallel to the boat. The boat and water fill the lower half of the scene and the autumn trees fill the upper half. The artist has signed and dated the painting in the lower right, “Winslow Homer 1892.”",{"_294":542,"_296":543,"_298":544},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1491.jpg?dl=1","/art/hound-and-hunter-nga-33970","/galleries/style/american-gilded-age/hound-and-hunter-nga-33970",{"_290":291,"_292":293},{"_224":537,"_125":538,"_284":539},{"_275":534,"_277":535,"_279":518,"_281":536},137.3,86.1525634765625,71.1525634765625,{"_286":224,"_123":540,"_154":541,"_140":53},{"_286":125,"_123":287,"_154":288,"_140":289},{"_286":284,"_123":166,"_154":165,"_140":168},"artist/winslow-homer","More by Winslow Homer","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1491/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1491/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1491/1920.jpg",{"_310":558,"_312":559},{"_310":556,"_312":557},{"_310":554,"_312":555},{"_310":552,"_312":553},{"_310":550,"_312":551},"#c7b58a",0.0236,"#756d53",0.0921,"#4b402b",0.1098,"#342113",0.2821,"#251e11",0.4924,"Winslow Homer","winslow-homer","American, 1836–1910",1836,1910,"Boston, Massachusetts","Prouts Neck, Maine","Homer began as an illustrator, covering the Civil War for Harper’s Weekly, and first made his name in painting with scenes of soldiers and country life.","italian-girl-si-chndm-1955-38-12-a","Italian girl",{"_42":619,"_221":620,"_324":621,"_326":385,"_328":563,"_330":451,"_332":603,"_333":622,"_334":-5,"_140":101},"ca. 1885","Pastel crayon on tan paper","32.3 x 25.4 cm (12 11/16 x 10 in.)",32.3,0.9348353552859618,[604,605,606,607,608],{"_220":300,"_221":301,"_42":302,"_303":603},"Courtesy of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum","1955-38-12-a","Elihu Vedder drew this in about 1885, aged 49.
