It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","Armies of men march and battle along a rocky outcropping set among huge rock formations and massive buildings under a stormy sky in this horizontal landscape painting. The people we can see all have pale skin. Sheets of rain fall from flint-gray clouds on our left into a valley, though hints of peach brighten the clouds along the mountainous horizon there. In the right half of the sky, light pours down from a brilliant white sun that breaks through white clouds to reveal topaz-blue patches of sky. The horizon comes about halfway up the composition and is lined with rugged white, pale pink, and olive-green mountains on our left and silvery-white buildings along the right half. These structures include two domed buildings and a colosseum among many others. The buildings are all enclosed within city walls buttressed with towers. The land dips precipitously from the rocky cliffs supporting the buildings, to sweep down toward us. A huge outcropping angles up like a ramp between us and the buildings in the distance. A road runs from the walled town toward us, down along the ridge and in front of the outcropping. Countless warriors march in rows of four or five across on the road past a man wearing a feathered helmet and armored breastplate. This man, Joshua, stands on a rocky precipice facing away from us with his right hand raised. He wears a scarlet-red toga under his breastplate, and a royal-blue cape flutters at his left side. He holds a round, copper-colored shield and a spear in his other hand. Two men with gray beards stand near Joshua with their backs to us. Both gesture up to the sky. One holds a slender staff and the other a curling horn. They and another pair of men, who stoop to hold poles used to carry a chest, all wear long, ivory-white robes, cherry-red drapery, and white turbans. The column of soldiers on foot and horseback pass in front of Joshua to a massive battlefield to our left. The fight takes place in a valley that leads back to a river. A bolt of lightning zigzags from the storm clouds and strikes a city in the deep distance. The artist signed the painting in the lower right, “J. Martin.”",{"_294":375,"_296":376,"_298":377},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1655.jpg?dl=1","/art/joshua-commanding-the-sun-to-stand-still-upon-gibeon-nga-129865","/galleries/style/georgian-britain/joshua-commanding-the-sun-to-stand-still-upon-gibeon-nga-129865",{"_290":373,"_292":374},{"_223":363,"_125":364,"_284":365},{"_275":360,"_277":361,"_279":344,"_281":362},246,166.762939453125,151.762939453125,{"_286":223,"_123":371,"_154":372,"_140":89},{"_286":125,"_123":368,"_154":369,"_140":370},{"_286":284,"_123":366,"_154":367,"_140":244},"era/19-britain","19th-century Britain","style/painting-19","More paintings of the 19th century",432,"artist/contemporaries-of-john-martin","John Martin's contemporaries","natural","ivory","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1655/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1655/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1655/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington","Washington, DC",{"_310":395,"_312":396},{"_310":393,"_312":394},{"_310":391,"_312":392},{"_310":389,"_312":390},{"_310":387,"_312":388},"#adaa9f",0.1053,"#7c756a",0.1295,"#1a1609",0.2377,"#4e4a3c",0.2526,"#342a17",0.2749,"John Martin","john-martin","British, 1789–1854","British",1789,1854,"virgil-s-tomb-by-moonlight-with-silius-italicus-declaiming-met-441769","Virgil's Tomb by Moonlight, with Silius Italicus Declaiming",{"_42":460,"_220":461,"_324":462,"_326":327,"_328":463,"_330":464,"_332":465,"_333":465,"_334":466,"_140":99},"1779","Paintings","Oil on canvas","40 x 50 in. On the left, a dirt path leads to the wooden gate. To the left of the gate, two people sit on the grass with a wicker basket between them. The tall trees that rise in the background have leaves in shades of green, yellow, and dark orange. The sky above the scene is yellow with some hints of light blue, and golden light shines down on the landscape.",{"_294":708,"_296":709,"_298":710},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1331.jpg?dl=1","/art/landscape-with-picnickers-and-donkeys-by-a-gate-nga-1151","/galleries/style/georgian-britain/landscape-with-picnickers-and-donkeys-by-a-gate-nga-1151",{"_290":373,"_292":374},{"_223":703,"_125":704,"_284":705},{"_275":700,"_277":701,"_279":702,"_281":686},113.11484375,138.2,98.11484375,{"_286":223,"_123":706,"_154":707,"_140":89},{"_286":125,"_123":368,"_154":369,"_140":370},{"_286":284,"_123":366,"_154":367,"_140":244},"artist/contemporaries-of-joseph-paul","Joseph Paul's contemporaries","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1331/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1331/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1331/1920.jpg",{"_310":724,"_312":725},{"_310":722,"_312":723},{"_310":720,"_312":721},{"_310":718,"_312":719},{"_310":716,"_312":717},"#b4864a",0.1225,"#7f6040",0.1471,"#574a3e",0.2102,"#dcbe7c",0.2589,"#31363a",0.2613,"Joseph Paul","joseph-paul","British, 1804–1887",1804,1887,"august-from-twelve-months-of-flowers-aic-127987","August, from Twelve Months of Flowers",{"_42":322,"_220":323,"_324":325,"_326":327,"_328":329,"_330":331,"_332":-5,"_333":-5,"_334":-5,"_140":99},0.7912519643792562,[753,754,755,756,757],{"_219":300,"_220":301,"_42":302,"_303":304},"1946.405",{"_294":750,"_296":751,"_298":752},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/310.jpg?dl=1","/art/august-from-twelve-months-of-flowers-aic-127987","/galleries/style/georgian-britain/august-from-twelve-months-of-flowers-aic-127987",{"_290":291,"_292":293},{"_223":747,"_125":748,"_284":749},{"_275":745,"_277":278,"_279":746,"_281":244},55.65007857517025,31.650078575170248,{"_286":223,"_123":170,"_154":169,"_140":99},{"_286":125,"_123":287,"_154":288,"_140":289},{"_286":284,"_123":166,"_154":165,"_140":168},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/310/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/310/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/310/1920.jpg",{"_310":766,"_312":767},{"_310":764,"_312":765},{"_310":762,"_312":763},{"_310":760,"_312":761},{"_310":758,"_312":759},"#796237",0.064,"#5c493a",0.0907,"#8a7b65",0.1271,"#baae9b",0.3131,"#d1c7b6",0.4051,"angel-of-the-revelation-book-of-revelation-chapter-10-met-340852","Angel of the Revelation (Book of Revelation, chapter 10)",{"_42":820,"_220":821,"_324":822,"_326":400,"_328":823,"_330":824,"_332":519,"_333":519,"_334":-5,"_140":103},"ca. 1803–5","drawing","Drawings","Watercolor, pen and black ink, brush and wash, over traces of graphite","Sheet: 15 7/16 × 10 1/4 in. A shepherd and a cow are guiding a flock of sheep, and buildings can be seen in the distance. The horizon divides the image into sky and earth. The brushstrokes are detailed, capturing textures effectively. The color palette consists of earthy tones with touches of brighter colors on the figures' clothing.",{"_294":1128,"_296":1129,"_298":1130},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1656.jpg?dl=1","/art/heroic-landscape-with-fisherman-cows-and-horsemen-nga-131866","/galleries/style/georgian-britain/heroic-landscape-with-fisherman-cows-and-horsemen-nga-131866",{"_290":291,"_292":293},{"_223":1125,"_125":1126,"_284":1127},{"_275":1122,"_277":1123,"_279":1108,"_281":1124},82.5,66.1468505859375,42.1468505859375,{"_286":223,"_123":655,"_154":656,"_140":89},{"_286":125,"_123":287,"_154":288,"_140":289},{"_286":284,"_123":166,"_154":165,"_140":168},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1656/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1656/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1656/1920.jpg",{"_310":1144,"_312":1145},{"_310":1142,"_312":1143},{"_310":1140,"_312":1141},{"_310":1138,"_312":1139},{"_310":1136,"_312":1137},"#878e7d",0.1386,"#4e4232",0.1457,"#b3a284",0.1756,"#8b7c60",0.2035,"#6a5f48",0.3366,{"_1147":-5,"_1148":1149,"_1150":1151,"_1152":8,"_1153":1154,"_1155":8},"user","csrf","f10d5d6716d461ffcd40d39ed0e13dfc0ffaff6c","cartCount",0,"dropLive","legal",[1156,1157,1158,1159,1160,1161,1162,1163,1164,1165,1166,1167],"uploadsEnabled",{"_220":1190,"_20":1191},{"_220":1188,"_20":1189},{"_220":1186,"_20":1187},{"_220":1184,"_20":1185},{"_220":1182,"_20":1183},{"_220":1180,"_20":1181},{"_220":1178,"_20":1179},{"_220":1176,"_20":1177},{"_220":1174,"_20":1175},{"_220":1172,"_20":1173},{"_220":1170,"_20":1171},{"_220":1168,"_20":1169},"credits","Open-Access Credits","accessibility","Accessibility Statement","vulnerability-disclosure","Vulnerability Disclosure Policy","own-photo","Printing Your Own Photo","copyright","Copyright and DMCA Policy","agents","Agent & API Terms","acceptable-use","Acceptable Use Policy","cookies","Cookie Policy","privacy","Privacy Policy","limited-editions","Limited Editions and Certificates","sale","Terms of Sale","terms","Terms of Use"]
