It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","note","The image shows a landscape scene from an elevated viewpoint. There are large columns of a classical ruin and a leafy tree on the left. On the right, there is a spreading tree with intricate leaves. In the background, there is a pastoral landscape with figures and animals. A shepherd and a cow are guiding a flock of sheep, and buildings can be seen in the distance. The horizon divides the image into sky and earth. The brushstrokes are detailed, capturing textures effectively. The color palette consists of earthy tones with touches of brighter colors on the figures' clothing.","images",{"_294":295,"_296":297,"_298":299},"download_url","https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1656.jpg?dl=1","page_url","/art/heroic-landscape-with-fisherman-cows-and-horsemen-nga-131866","walk_url","/galleries/style/georgian-britain/heroic-landscape-with-fisherman-cows-and-horsemen-nga-131866","frame",{"_290":291,"_292":293},{"_225":282,"_125":283,"_284":285},"size",{"_275":276,"_277":278,"_279":244,"_280":281},"w",82.5,"h",66.1468505859375,"image_w","image_h",42.1468505859375,{"_286":225,"_123":171,"_154":170,"_140":89},{"_286":125,"_123":287,"_154":288,"_140":289},"era",{"_286":284,"_123":167,"_154":166,"_140":169},"facet","style/print-18","More prints of the 18th century",129,"moulding","white","mount","snow","480","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1656/480.jpg","960","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1656/960.jpg","1920","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1656/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington","city","Washington, DC",{"_310":320,"_312":321},{"_310":318,"_312":319},{"_310":316,"_312":317},{"_310":314,"_312":315},{"_310":311,"_312":313},"hex","#878e7d","weight",0.1386,"#4e4232",0.1457,"#b3a284",0.1756,"#8b7c60",0.2035,"#6a5f48",0.3366,"John Baptist Jackson","john-baptist-jackson","bio","British, 1701–1780","nationality","British","birth_year",1701,"death_year",1780,"birth_place","death_place","about_excerpt","saint-john-the-evangelist-nga-54044","Saint John the Evangelist",{"_42":383,"_222":384,"_324":385,"_326":327,"_328":386,"_330":387,"_332":-5,"_333":-5,"_334":-5,"_140":101},"1771","chiaroscuro woodcut in tan and brown","sheet: 19.7 × 15.4 cm (7 3/4 × 6 1/16 in.) other (text beneath image): 3.2 × 15.7 cm (1 1/4 × 6 3/16 in.) mount: 38.2 × 27.1 cm (15 1/16 × 10 11/16 in.)",15.4,19.7,0.702880859375,[368,369,370,371,372],{"_221":300,"_222":301,"_42":302,"_303":304},"1973.58.3","John Skippe made this in 1771, aged 29. The scene is framed by a silhouette of low boulders along the lower right corner, and a towering cream-white rock rising two-thirds of the way up the composition to our left. Scrubby, celery-green vegetation grows on the rocky outcropping. Near the center, close to the towering white rocks, three people sit, reaching for something near one end of a boat while a fourth person braces against the rock, presumably to push the boat out to the sea. Closer to us, three people on the shore work with a net. Two stand with the net hooked over their shoulders, and a third person crouches in the water with head down. The people all wear simple shirts and pants in shades of tan, mustard yellow, burnt orange, and pale blue. All but two wear hats. The sea meets the shore with frothy white foam and cresting, low waves. The sea beyond fades from pale sage green to arctic blue along the horizon, which comes about a third of the way up the composition. Two sail boats tilt against the wind in the distance.
