The scene is framed by a silhouette of low boulders along the lower right corner, and a towering cream-white rock rising two-thirds of the way up the composition to our left. Scrubby, celery-green vegetation grows on the rocky outcropping. Near the center, close to the towering white rocks, three people sit, reaching for something near one end of a boat while a fourth person braces against the rock, presumably to push the boat out to the sea. Closer to us, three people on the shore work with a net. Two stand with the net hooked over their shoulders, and a third person crouches in the water with head down. The people all wear simple shirts and pants in shades of tan, mustard yellow, burnt orange, and pale blue. All but two wear hats. The sea meets the shore with frothy white foam and cresting, low waves. The sea beyond fades from pale sage green to arctic blue along the horizon, which comes about a third of the way up the composition. Two sail boats tilt against the wind in the distance. Pale, smoky lavender-purple clouds drift across the ice-blue sky.",{"_296":375,"_298":376,"_300":377},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1552.jpg?dl=1","/art/seashore-with-fishermen-nga-52265","/galleries/style/georgian-britain/seashore-with-fishermen-nga-52265",{"_292":293,"_294":295},{"_225":364,"_125":365,"_286":366},{"_277":361,"_279":362,"_281":345,"_283":363},142.6,116.65009765625,101.65009765625,{"_288":225,"_123":373,"_154":374,"_140":97},{"_288":125,"_123":370,"_154":371,"_140":372},{"_288":286,"_123":367,"_154":368,"_140":369},"era/18-britain","18th-century Britain",42,"style/painting-18","More paintings of the 18th century",168,"artist/thomas-gainsborough","More by Thomas Gainsborough","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1552/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1552/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1552/1920.jpg",{"_312":391,"_314":392},{"_312":389,"_314":390},{"_312":387,"_314":388},{"_312":385,"_314":386},{"_312":383,"_314":384},"#b1a488",0.0916,"#675840",0.1412,"#92918c",0.208,"#312319",0.2166,"#b7bfbc",0.3426,"Thomas Gainsborough","thomas-gainsborough","English, 1727–1788","English",1727,1788,"Sudbury","Gainsborough trained in London with the French engraver Hubert Gravelot, then built his career as a portraitist first in Suffolk and later in fashionable Bath before moving to London in 1774.","small-landscape-si-saam-1956-11-20","Small Landscape","Unrecorded British maker","ca. 1750-1800","17 1/4 x 21 3/4 in. The scene is painted loosely with brushstrokes visible throughout, so some details are difficult to make out. For the surface of the river, russet-brown and steel-gray paint skims lightly across the canvas and leaves some unpainted areas visible, creating the effect of light shimmering on the still water. On our left, a shallow wooden barge is propelled along the stream by two men in red caps with long poles. The boat carries a white horse wearing blinders and a harness. The riverbank beyond is lined with pale, sage-green grass tinged with gold, growing in front of a tangle of darker green trees and bushes. Across the water from us near the middle of the picture, a small rowboat sits in the shallows at the foot of a steep riverbank. Above, a white cottage with a reddish roof and chimney is tucked behind the trees, with a wooden rack full of hay next to it. Nearby, a plow and wheeled cart, highlighted with strokes of white, sit near more mounds of hay. Rocky fields reach into the distance. The vista is blocked to our right by another clump of trees and a rocky outcropping, rising from the stream, to our right of center. The steep, dark roof of a farmhouse is barely visible among the trees. Along the riverside to our right, a small group of cinnamon-brown and cream-white cows stand at water's edge. A rolling pasture stretches behind them to meet blue hills in the distance. The background is earth-brown around her face and deepens to almost black in the corners.",{"_296":1061,"_298":1062,"_300":1063},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1336.jpg?dl=1","/art/mrs-paul-cobb-methuen-nga-1159","/galleries/style/georgian-britain/mrs-paul-cobb-methuen-nga-1159",{"_292":293,"_294":295},{"_225":1058,"_125":1059,"_286":1060},{"_277":1055,"_279":1056,"_281":1057,"_283":1040},85.3828125,99,70.3828125,{"_288":225,"_123":373,"_154":374,"_140":97},{"_288":125,"_123":370,"_154":371,"_140":372},{"_288":286,"_123":367,"_154":368,"_140":369},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1336/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1336/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1336/1920.jpg",{"_312":1077,"_314":1078},{"_312":1075,"_314":1076},{"_312":1073,"_314":1074},{"_312":1071,"_314":1072},{"_312":1069,"_314":1070},"#6c6248",0.0752,"#a18f63",0.094,"#cec5a1",0.0952,"#383831",0.1958,"#1f2728",0.5398,"wivenhoe-park-essex-nga-1147","Wivenhoe Park, Essex",{"_42":826,"_222":827,"_325":828,"_327":396,"_329":829,"_331":830,"_333":-5,"_335":-5,"_337":831,"_140":99},"1816","overall: 56.1 x 101.2 cm (22 1/16 x 39 13/16 in.) framed: 77.8 x 122.5 x 8.8 cm (30 5/8 x 48 1/4 x 3 7/16 in.)",101.2,56.1,1.8467087466185752,[1109,1110,1111,1112,1113],{"_221":302,"_222":303,"_42":304,"_305":306},"1942.9.10","John Constable painted this in 1816, aged 40. A wooden fence closer to us crosses the landscape from the lower left corner and disappears where the land slopes down to meet the water at the center of the painting. Several black and white cows graze in the field beyond the fence to our left. Two men in a wooden boat pull in nets on the lake to our right near a pair of swans. The lake crosses the composition in the near distance, disappearing into a culvert farther back. A donkey pulls a small carriage with two people near a bridge that crosses the lake in the distance to our left. The brick manor house is visible through a break in the full, deep green trees that line the horizon, which comes halfway up the composition. The clouds cast noticeable shadows in the brightly sunlit scene.",{"_296":1106,"_298":1107,"_300":1108},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1327.jpg?dl=1","/art/wivenhoe-park-essex-nga-1147","/galleries/style/georgian-britain/wivenhoe-park-essex-nga-1147",{"_292":293,"_294":295},{"_225":1103,"_125":1104,"_286":1105},{"_277":1100,"_279":1101,"_281":1084,"_283":1102},116.2,69.8001953125,54.8001953125,{"_288":225,"_123":806,"_154":807,"_140":99},{"_288":125,"_123":289,"_154":290,"_140":291},{"_288":286,"_123":165,"_154":164,"_140":167},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1327/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1327/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1327/1920.jpg",{"_312":1122,"_314":1123},{"_312":1120,"_314":1121},{"_312":1118,"_314":1119},{"_312":1116,"_314":1117},{"_312":1114,"_314":1115},"#796b3d",0.0911,"#7c8b94",0.0987,"#4d442a",0.2058,"#322d1a",0.2536,"#837f77",0.3508,{"_1125":-5,"_1126":1127,"_1128":1129,"_1130":8,"_1131":1132,"_1133":8},"user","csrf","f165dc51ef7f53a4e64d84dba4581d311932608a","cartCount",0,"dropLive","legal",[1134,1135,1136,1137,1138,1139,1140,1141,1142,1143,1144,1145],"uploadsEnabled",{"_222":1168,"_20":1169},{"_222":1166,"_20":1167},{"_222":1164,"_20":1165},{"_222":1162,"_20":1163},{"_222":1160,"_20":1161},{"_222":1158,"_20":1159},{"_222":1156,"_20":1157},{"_222":1154,"_20":1155},{"_222":1152,"_20":1153},{"_222":1150,"_20":1151},{"_222":1148,"_20":1149},{"_222":1146,"_20":1147},"credits","Open-Access Credits","accessibility","Accessibility Statement","vulnerability-disclosure","Vulnerability Disclosure Policy","own-photo","Printing Your Own Photo","copyright","Copyright and DMCA Policy","agents","Agent & API Terms","acceptable-use","Acceptable Use Policy","cookies","Cookie Policy","privacy","Privacy Policy","limited-editions","Limited Editions and Certificates","sale","Terms of Sale","terms","Terms of Use"]
