It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","note","Gauguin portrays himself half-turned, glancing at us sideways with green eyes and one cocked blue eyebrow, his face modelled in bold patches of lime, plum, yellow and blue against a vivid green wall and a window opening onto vegetation.","Painted in muted lime green, plum purple, buttercup yellow, slate and royal blue, the head and shoulders of a man with peach-colored skin sitting in front of a window looks at us in this stylized, vertical portrait. His body and face are angled to our right but he looks at us from the corners of his eyes, which are grass-green with touches of yellow. One cobalt-blue eyebrow is cocked, and shading in denim blue, butter yellow, and fern green create hollows under both eyes. His flat nose has a broad bridge, and his pale pink lips are closed, the far corner pulled slightly up. His mustache is painted with visible strokes of forest green and his ginger-orange beard is trimmed along his prominent, jutting chin. His short, dark hair is brushed back from his temples and is painted with strokes of pine green, navy blue, and coral orange. His shirt has a wide, golden yellow stripe along the collar above indigo blue, under a grayish-violet purple jacket. The wall over his shoulder, in the upper left corner, is painted vivid lime green with long, vertical brushstrokes. The view through the window beyond his other shoulder is of vegetation and mountains. The portrait is painted with visible brushstrokes throughout, and is especially loose in the background, hair, and jacket. An inscription in dark green script in the upper left reads, “a l'ami Carriere PGauguin.” A second inscription in the lower left is written with dark brown paint: “l'ami Laval PGo.”","images",{"_297":298,"_299":300,"_301":302},"download_url","https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1609.jpg?dl=1","page_url","/art/self-portrait-dedicated-to-carriere-nga-66418","walk_url","/galleries/style/painting-19/self-portrait-dedicated-to-carriere-nga-66418","frame",{"_293":294,"_295":296},{"_226":285,"_125":286,"_287":288},"size",{"_278":279,"_280":281,"_282":283,"_284":247},"w",52.622314453125,"h",61.5,"image_w",37.622314453125,"image_h",{"_289":226,"_123":169,"_154":168,"_140":85},{"_289":125,"_123":290,"_154":291,"_140":292},"era",{"_289":287,"_123":165,"_154":164,"_140":167},"facet","style/post-impressionism","More Post-Impressionism",62,"moulding","natural","mount","ivory","480","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1609/480.jpg","960","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1609/960.jpg","1920","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1609/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington","city","Washington, DC",{"_313":323,"_315":324},{"_313":321,"_315":322},{"_313":319,"_315":320},{"_313":317,"_315":318},{"_313":314,"_315":316},"hex","#bc8a29","weight",0.0415,"#89a449",0.1436,"#bea479",0.216,"#6c7964",0.2317,"#61605b",0.3672,"Paul Gauguin","paul-gauguin","bio","French, 1848–1903","nationality","French","birth_year",1848,"death_year",1903,"birth_place","Paris","death_place","Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands","about_excerpt","Gauguin worked as a Paris stockbroker and collected the Impressionists before taking up painting full time in the 1880s, showing in the last five Impressionist exhibitions.","study-of-a-courtier-si-saam-1930-12-45","Study of a Courtier",{"_42":398,"_223":399,"_327":400,"_329":400,"_331":-5,"_333":-5,"_335":-5,"_337":-5,"_339":-5,"_140":103},"1877","italy","watercolor on paper mounted on paperboard","14 x 9 in.
